ZYC300 is specifically designed to activate a response that kills cells expressing a newly discovered target, CYP1B1, a protein with high expression in many types of cancer, but restricted expression in normal tissue. In vitro experiments demonstrated that CYP1B1 specific human T cells kill CYP1B1 expressing tumor cells taken directly from patients. Additional data indicates that injection of ZYC300 activates cells that kill tumor cells.
Aphase 1/2a trial of ZYC300 in late-stage metastatic cancer patients has been completed. A phase 1/2b trial will begin in 2006.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 18 million new cases of cancer have been diagnosed since 1990 and approximately 1.3 million new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2005. The National Cancer Institute estimates annual direct medical costs for cancer treatment to be $40 billion in the United States.
